Gas Detonation Claims 3 Police Officers During Eviction Action in Northern Italy
Three police officers perished and more than a dozen others were hurt in a seemingly deliberate blast caused by gas at a country home in Italy's north.
Sequence of Events
The blast occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the residence close to the Verona region to enforce an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.
The three officers killed served in the Carabinieri force.
Legal Proceedings
One male and one female were taken into custody at the location and one more individual who fled following the blast was apprehended soon after. All three have been transported to hospital.
The explosion could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the area revealed the building left as a pile of rubble.
“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who added that previous tries had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.
Financial Context
The leader of the Veneto area, President Zaia, stated the farmhouse was subject to an court order due to financial obligations accumulated by the siblings.
Mediators had been sent to speak to the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the home. When the officers arrived just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe one of the siblings triggered the blast.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno informed reporters.
“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the blast precisely impacted our officers,” he explained.
Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the property, the interior minister stated.
Casualties and Damage
Injured individuals by the incident consisted of eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a emergency responder.
According to the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.
The prosecutor was convinced the blast had happened on a story above the entrance and informed journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the explosion, he revealed members had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the gas cylinders being turned on”.
Community Reaction
“We all knew the situation was dire,” nearby inhabitants informed local news, noting that the three had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in paying tribute to the three men who had been killed in the performance of their duties.
