Teenager Discovered Deceased After Untrue Accusations of Stealing Ashes
A teenage youth was discovered deceased just days following being wrongly blamed of taking the cremated remains of a dead baby during a break-in, a coroner's inquiry has learned.
Heartbreaking Finding
The young boy's parents found his remains in his room at his Flintshire home on November 19th, 2021.
Untrue Allegations Start
The investigation heard how his parent got a message on 8 November 2021 via social media, from a woman inquiring if her son was her child. The message stated: "Tell him appreciation for burgling my apartment."
In a statement read to the proceedings, the mother said the woman had been in the media, claiming her baby's ashes had been stolen in a burglary - a allegation which was false.
Law Enforcement Investigation
An official inquiry from authorities later determined the supposed break-in complainant had "provided false information" and "evidence shows that the property was not taken in the first place".
News coverage about the alleged stolen remains generated online comments, and although Kai was not named in the messages, his parent said people "understood it was him".
The "social media content were really upsetting", she stated.
Mental Wellbeing Effect
She explained that Kai had been diagnosed with moderate attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that disorder, other peoples' views really mattered to him.
"It would have affected him severely," she commented, "especially when this was not true".
The teenager was detained at his residence, but nothing was discovered. He was transported to a police station and later released pending further inquiry.
Police said they would be in touch, the hearing learned, but had failed to contacted the family by the moment of his death.
Withdrawal and Anxiety
His parent said Kai "withdrew into himself" after the detention and "would keep asking me whether I had received anything from the authorities", because his ADHD meant sometimes "a minute could feel like days".
When she spoke to him about the alleged incident, she said her child told her he had entered the residence because the woman who lived there had said he could utilize the toilet anytime he needed, but refuted removing anything.
Digital Bullying
In a combined testimony between her and her husband, the mother said her son was being bullied online after the allegations.
The inquest heard that one young adult encouraged Kai to end his life.
She had no worries on the evening before he passed away, describing how she had heard him "chuckling and teasing".
She portrayed him as a "compassionate, affectionate" boy, and said her "family is totally devastated".
He had been "obviously concealing his concerns", she said, noting that he could not stand to have anybody "have negative thoughts of him".
Educational Reaction
The hearing received testimony from school staff at the local secondary school.
On November 8th, she "heard some students talking that Kai had been arrested and that was the first I heard".
"He informed me... he'd was innocent," she continued.
After the conversation, the staff member said she rang the family's parents' landline and left a message saying she had spoken to Kai about the allegations.
The proceedings learned his family said they did not got that communication.
Formal Conclusion
Lead coroner informed the inquest he would wait for reports regarding what improvements had been made to handling individuals with ADHD, before deciding whether he should make a avoidance of future fatalities report.
Delivering a descriptive finding, he stated: "Around November 8th, 2021, unsupported allegations were made against Kai Benjamin Lloyd, a 14-year-old individual.
"Likely falsehoods were afterwards embellished and amplified through the platform of online networks.
"On November 11th, he was questioned by the authorities and following his interview he was freed whilst inquiries continued."
The coroner concluded: "There is no proof that the acts or failures of any organization caused or added to his passing and although it was the result of a self-inflicted act it is impossible to discern his intent."
