The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a significant honors show approaches, you'll find a demand to include fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types successfully include numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game received no nominations that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
